René Magritte was born on November 21, 1898, in Lessen, in the province of Hainaut. As one of the most important figures of Belgian surrealism, Magritte quickly surrounded himself with Belgian, French, and American artists who would influence his work throughout his life. He developed his oeuvre using various artistic techniques, including “surrealism in full sunlight,” as he himself described it, and the “période vache” in the late 1940s.
The 1950s and 1960s were marked by the artist's work and search for repetition and the large Magritte-esque images that made him successful. He died on August 15, 1967, from pancreatic cancer.
